#22 Shi - The Fire Element
Kolkata - 9th August 2025
Shiva The Destroyer. But it is not destruction for its own sake. It is a purification, a returning of the Tangible into the Subtle, as in a sacrificial fire. To understand this, don't think of the apocalypse; instead, look at a candle.
The wax begins as a solid, an intricate, solid material made of long hydrocarbon chains. This is the tangible form: dense, bonded, full of potential but unusable until something changes. The flame, sitting lightly above, isn't burning the solid directly. It melts the solid wax and turns it into an active, flowing liquid – the tangible flow.
Then comes the alchemy...
From liquid, under sustained heat, the wax vaporizes — becomes gas. And only in this gaseous, subtle, untethered form can the flame consume it. This is the moment of Shi. The point at which the bound complexity surrenders to the flame and is liberated into Va — air, breath, subtle flow. That which was once rigid, complex, and cold, now becomes simple, light, and warm.
In this cycle, the flame is both end and engine. It produces the heat that melts the wax that fuels the flame that keeps the cycle going. To interrupt any step is to kill the flame.
There is no flame without subtlety. There is no subtlety without fire.
This is Shiva's fire — The Transforming Principle. You may easily put out a candle, but not so much, a principle. Shiva is the principle - the fire that never dies, and serves as the root for all "fires" in existence. Fires in this sense, is a moment of dynamic persistence - balance. It is true for a candle flame, or a fusion powered star. A star survives because the explosive fusion reaction is balanced by an equally strong opponent - the strong gravitational force.
It does not destroy for ruin. It refines.
It simplifies what is too complex to move, and makes it flow.
"Shi" is this moment of combustion.
Where the gas of the self, volatile but light, surrenders to the subtle force of truth.
Where karma-bound wax gives rise to breath-bound flame.
And when the process ends — when no more subtlety can be drawn —
the flame withdraws.
Shi-Va dances on.
